K Santhanam, an eminent nuclear scientist, passed away peacefully in a private nursing home in the early hours of April 26, 2021 in New Delhi.  His last rites are to be performed on April 28, 2021 in New Delhi.  

K Santhanam was an eminent Indian nuclear scientist with an illustrious and long career in the fields of science, technology, national security, defence and diplomacy. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan award in recognition of his contributions to the Shakti-98 series of nuclear tests conducted in May 1998.

He was Director General, Institute for Defence Studies Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi (2001 – 2004), Chief Adviser (Technology) in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He worked for about 43 years in the area of science, technology and security and contributed to the evolution of India’s positions on disarmament and arms control. He has served as India member in the Inter-Governmental Committee of Experts set up by the UN Secretary General (1978-80) on verification of arms control treaties, has been Scientific Adviser in the Ministry of External affairs (1984-86) and a member of the National Security Advisory Board.

He set up India Central Asia Foundation to advance mutual interests between India and the countries of Central Asia.  Santy, he was affectionately known, has mentored many scientists and scholars in his various capacities. As President of India Central Foundation, he guided it’s destiny to the pinnacle of fame.

We shall miss his presence and guidance in the year ahead. Santy you have worked hard for the nation and ICAF. May you rest in peace.
